Why does Alt + 0176 do nothing?

Classic Alt codes need a numeric keypad with Num Lock on. On most laptops, copy and paste is faster than enabling a hidden keypad.

How do I type this in Word?

Open the symbol page, then type the Unicode hex and press Alt + X. Example: 00B0 then Alt + X for the degree sign.

Does this work on a Mac?

Yes. Copy still works everywhere. Each symbol page also lists the Option shortcut when one exists.
